Privacy Policy

This privacy policy explains how WTab, the “New Tab” Chrome extension (“the Extension”), collects, uses, stores, and protects information. Please read it before using the Extension.

1. Information We Collect #

The Extension is designed to minimize data collection. Unless you explicitly enable features that require it, we do not collect personally identifiable information (PII). The types of data that may be collected include:

  • Local settings and preferences: configuration data stored in the browser (for example, in chrome.storage) such as theme, homepage settings, or pinned items. This data remains in your browser.
  • Non-personal usage statistics (optional): if you opt in to anonymous analytics or error reporting, we may collect de-identified usage information (e.g., feature usage counts, crash reports). This data does not contain names, email addresses, or other PII.
  • Google Calendar events (optional): only if you start the Google Calendar sync yourself. The events are read into your browser and stay there. Section 4 sets out exactly what is read, where it is kept, and how to revoke access.

2. How We Use Information #

  • To provide and maintain Extension functionality, such as restoring your settings and preferences.
  • To improve the Extension and fix bugs if you opt in to anonymous analytics.
  • To comply with legal obligations or protect our rights when required.

3. Permissions #

To implement certain features, the Extension may request permissions in the manifest. Common permissions include:

  • storage: to save settings and preferences.
  • identity: to obtain a Google access token when, and only when, you start the Google Calendar sync described in section 4.
  • alarms and notifications: to fire the reminders you set on calendar events and habits.
  • search: to run a query from the new tab search box in the engine you picked.
  • scripting plus optional access to the page you are on: used only after you grant it, to slide a habit reminder onto the tab you are looking at.

We will not request unnecessary permissions and will not access browsing history or other sensitive data without clear user consent.

4. Google User Data and Limited Use #

One optional feature touches your Google Account: Google Calendar sync in the calendar widget. It stays off until you press Sync yourself and approve access on Google’s own consent screen.

Scopes the Extension requests:

  • https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.readonly: read-only access to the events on your primary Google Calendar.
  • No other Google API scope is requested. The Extension never creates, edits, or deletes anything in your Google Account.

When you press Sync, your browser calls the Google Calendar API directly and reads the events around the month you are looking at. Only the fields the widget draws are kept — event id, title, description, date, start time and end time — and they appear in the calendar as read-only entries.

That data stays in your browser’s extension storage. We run no server for it and never receive a copy: the traffic goes between your browser and Google alone. If you switch sync on in settings, the entries ride along in chrome.storage.sync, Chrome’s own sync service under your Google Account. No third party is involved.

The Extension uses no AI or machine-learning model on Google user data. It ships no local AI/ML model and sends no Google user data to any third-party AI service. “AI Mode” in the search box is only a choice of search engine: picking it makes the search box open Google’s own AI Mode results page (google.com/search?udm=50) with the words you typed. It has no access to your calendar or to any other Google user data.

Limited Use compliance statement # WTab’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs to any other app will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. The use of raw or derived user data received from Google Workspace APIs will adhere to the Google User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

You can revoke the Extension’s access at any time on your Google Account permissions page. To remove the entries it imported, delete them in the calendar widget or uninstall the Extension, which takes its local storage with it.

5. Third-Party Services #

If we use third-party services (for example, optional analytics or crash-reporting providers), we will disclose that and select services that support de-identified data where possible. Third-party providers have their own privacy practices.

6. Data Storage and Security #

Extension data is primarily stored locally in your browser. We take reasonable measures to protect data, but cannot guarantee absolute security. Please avoid submitting sensitive personal information through the Extension.

7. Data Sharing and Sales #

We do not sell or rent your personal information. We will not share PII with third parties except with your consent or as required by law.

8. Children #

The Extension is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children under the age of 16. If you believe information about a child has been collected without parental consent, contact us and we will take steps to delete it.

9. Your Rights #

Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information. To exercise those rights, contact us using the details below.

10. Changes to This Policy #

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date.
